A Lifelong Curiosity
Bob’s interest in engineering and making started early. Like many youngsters he had a habit of taking things apart to see how they worked. While not always successful at putting them back together, the curiosity was always there! He wanted to understand the mechanisms, materials, forces and decisions behind the objects around him.
This curiosity has stayed with him throughout his working life. With a background in physics, electronics, software and business process management; Bob has always looked at both natural and man-made things with a reverse-engineering mindset. He constantly asks how things work, why they are shaped that way and what problems they are meant to solve.
Combining Heritage with Modern Capability
Before MedTec became part of the group, Bob built RAD Additive around practical 3D printing and additive manufacturing. For him additive manufacturing has never been about replacing every other process. It is simply one part of a wider engineering and manufacturing system where design, material choice, tolerances, inspection, finishing, assembly, cost and production volume all still matter.
This perspective makes MedTec an essential part of the group. MedTec brings established engineering design experience, CAD capability, inspection knowledge, customer history and a strong connection to traditional engineering sectors. This addition has accelerated the journey RAD was already on, creating a more rounded engineering group much sooner than could have been achieved organically.
What excites Bob most is the combination of these capabilities. RAD Additive brings modern manufacturing flexibility, prototyping and practical making. MedTec provides engineering heritage, design depth, CAD, inspection and technical documentation. Together the group can support customers from early ideas and design development through to prototypes, validation, production support and problem solving.
A Shared Vision for the Future
Bob works closely with his son Dominic Urry, MedTec’s Technical Director. Building the group together gives the journey a very personal dimension. They are focused on developing a business that respects MedTec’s history while securing a strong, sustainable future.
For existing MedTec customers continuity matters. Bob understands that trust is built over time through good communication, reliable delivery and sound engineering judgement. His aim is to protect what made MedTec valued in the first place while adding new capability, energy and long-term support.
For new customers MedTec offers practical, responsive engineering support backed by a wider group capability. Whether the requirement is CAD, mechanical design, product development, inspection, prototyping, additive manufacturing or support with a technical challenge the starting point is always the same: understand the problem properly, then help choose the right route forward.
Ultimately Bob believes good engineering is not just about producing drawings or parts. It is about helping customers make better decisions, reduce risk and turn ideas into robust, useful solutions.
